The Best of Intentions

There’s a saying about good intentions and a road paved to… somewhere. Well it’s not quite that bad on our little patch of dirt, but the fall and winter certainly weren’t quite as productive as we’d hoped, which has made spring 2023 extra busy.

The biggest change is that we have expanded our flock with 18 Golden Comets and 17 Black Australorps and have upgraded the coop and chicken run accordingly. The new additions will likely start laying in August, which means a limited supply of eggs until then. They’re given organic feed, cuttings from our garden, and healthy kitchen scraps.

We’ve started three varieties of eggplants — Traviata (Italian), Millionaire (Japanese), and Patio Baby (a miniature variety). Our Mountain Merit slicing and Pozzano Roma tomatoes will be back, along with Mountain Magic salad tomatoes and a few Caiman plants, another slicing variety. Wonder Bell peppers and La Bomba jalapeños are returning, along with Trident peppers, a poblano variety. Hopefully everything will be ready to transplant in mid-May.

Next week we expect to direct seed Emerald zucchini, Smooth Criminal squash, Capitano Romano beans, heat tolerant Romaine lettuce, more Chinese cabbage (Suzuko, Scarlette, and Yuushou), Nantes carrots, and anything else we can find in our seed box.

We’re getting excited for the opening of the 2023 Coweta County Farmers Market in June, and as always, keep an eye out here, on our Facebook page, or Market Wagon. We’ll update as eggs and veggies become available.

Once the plants are established, maybe we can see about that neglected greenhouse frame…
